Nvidia Releases "Creator Ready" RTX Drivers

Earlier this week, Nvidia rolled out a set of "creator ready" drivers that are compatible with consumer GPUs, but optimized for professional applications. This level of support is typically reserved for drivers that only work with pricey Quadro GPUs, but Nvidia says they've conducted "exhaustive multi-app testing" in programs like Adobe Premiere and After Effects. Support for this driver goes all the way back to Pascal cards, and extends to Nvidia's more affordable offerings like the GTX 1050 and the more recent 1660. Perhaps even more interestingly, Nvidia claims they've worked with a number of software vendors to leverage the raytracing and machine-learning muscle their RTX cards offer. Autodesk Arnold and Unreal Engine 4, for example, now support RTX accelerated rendering, and Redcine-X Pro seemingly uses Turing's updated video processing block to decode 8K video without taxing the CPU. Meanwhile, Lightroom uses "an extensively trained convolutional neural network to provide state-of-the-art image enhancing for RAW photographs." While I haven't tested Lightroom's new features myself, in my experience, neural networks can perform small miracles when processing images. Nvidia also claims the new driver features significant performance improvements in Photoshop, Premiere, Blender Cycles, and Cinema 4D.

"Creators are constantly faced with tight deadlines and depend on having the latest hardware and creative tools to complete their projects on time, without compromising quality," said Eric Bourque, senior software development manager at Autodesk. "We're excited that NVIDIA is introducing a Creator Ready Driver program because it will bring Arnold users an even higher level of support, helping them bring their creative visions to life faster and more efficiently." The first Creator Ready Driver is now available from NVIDIA.com or GeForce Experience. From GeForce Experience, you can switch between Game Ready and Creator Ready Drivers at any time by clicking the menu (three vertical dots in the top right corner). Creator Ready Drivers are supported for Turing-based GeForce RTX, GTX and TITAN GPUs, Volta-based TITAN V, Pascal-based GeForce GTX and TITAN GPUs, and all modern Quadro GPUs.

AMD Investor Slides Confirm 2019 CPU Releases

On their investor website, AMD recently published a set of slides that confirm the release of 3rd generation Ryzen and Threadripper CPUs some time in 2019. Pro variants of the 2nd generation Ryzen APUs are slated to come out this Spring, while 3rd generation Ryzen desktop processors are scheduled for a "mid-year" 2019 release.
3rd generation Threadripper CPUs didn't get a release date more specific than "2019," and AMD's 7nm "Navi" and 7nm+ "Next-Gen" GPU architectures are said to be coming sometime between now and 2020. The company also reitarated that the somewhat mysterious "Radeon Vega Mobile" GPU which, as far as I know, has only popped up as an optional upgrade in the Apple Macbook Pro, is still part of their 2019 product stack. JPR Releases New GPU Market Share Statistics

Over the weekend, VentureBeat got an early look at Jon Peddie Research's Q4 2018 add-in board report, and found that discrete GPU shipments dropped in Q4 2018. But the market researcher just posted their own summary of the report, complete with statistics that previous interpretations left out. The research firm found that graphics board shipments dropped a whopping 40.2% year-to-year and 10.7% quarter-to-quarter, which isn't surprising, given that the cryptocurrency bubble peaked at the beginning of 2018. Nvidia accounted for 81.2% of the discrete GPU market in Q4 2018, a increase from their 66.3% share in Q4 2017, while AMD's market share reportedly dropped from 33.7% to 18.8%. Thanks to cageymaru for the tip.

"The fourth quarter is normally flat to up seasonally," said Dr. John Peddie, President, and founder of Jon Peddie Research. "However, this quarter we found that AIB shipments decreased from the last quarter by 10.7%, which is which is below the ten-year average of a 2.3% decrease. This has largely been attributed to the hang-over of the crypto-mining gold rush." For the year 2018 $17 billion of AIBs were sold. Since 1981, 2,091 million AIBs have been shipped!

NVIDIA Releases Its Financial Results for Q4 and Fiscal 2019

NVIDIA's announcement of better-than-expected earnings for Q4 2019 caused the stock to rise 8% in after hours trading. NVIDIA reported Q4 2019 revenue of $2.21 billion, down 24% from $2.91 billion a year earlier, and down 31% from $3.18 billion in the previous quarter. Analysts expected $2.20 billion in Q4 2019. NVIDIA reported record full-year revenue of $11.72 billion, up 21 percent from a year ago. NVIDIA's gaming business generated $954 million in revenue, which was under the $1.21 billion that analysts predicted. The Data Center business segment made $679 million in revenue, which was far less than the $839 million consensus estimate from analysts polled by Refinitiv. Other misses included the Professional Visualization segment, Automotive segment, original equipment manufacturers and intellectual property. NVIDIA's outlook for the first quarter of fiscal 2020 includes revenue that is expected to be $2.20 billion, plus or minus 2%. NVIDIA says its fiscal 2020 revenue is expected to be flat to down slightly.

"This was a turbulent close to what had been a great year," said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA. "The combination of post-crypto excess channel inventory and recent deteriorating end-market conditions drove a disappointing quarter. "Despite this setback, NVIDIA's fundamental position and the markets we serve are strong. The accelerated computing platform we pioneered is central to some of world's most important and fastest growing industries -- from artificial intelligence to autonomous vehicles to robotics. We fully expect to return to sustained growth," he said.

Nvidia Releases 418.91 WHQL Drivers

February is packed with big launches from AAA devs, and Nvidia just released a new driver to support the slew of upcoming titles. 418.91 WHQL offers "optimum" DLSS and raytracing performance in Metro Exodus, and apparently implements some optimizations in Battlefield V as well. The detailed driver release notes (PDF warning) also mention that Nvidia is disabling G-Sync in games that are designed to run at a fixed framerate, and says that Apex Legends, Hitman 2, and ARK Survival may still have some lingering issues that will be addressed in future revisions. You can download the Windows 10 version of the drivers here.

Our new Game Ready driver is also a must-have if you’re intending to play Anthem's February 15th Early Access release, Crackdown 3, or Far Cry New Dawn. Performance and stability is improved with each Game Ready driver, so it's recommended you download and install to ensure the best possible experience from the second you hit play.
