ASUS is getting back into the computer power supply game in a big way. Today we have the Republic of Gamers Thor 1200 that promises to allow you to "HARNESS THUNDER." This is a massive 1200 watt PSU and the first thing that will catch your eye is the OLED panel that will tell you just how much power you're using at the moment.

AsusTek Computer Inc. (ASUS) is one of the older, most influential, and most innovative companies in the enthusiast realm having been founded by former Acer engineers in 1989.

Today, ASUS' product portfolio touches on just about every aspect of the consumer, enthusiast, DIY, and even the professional market with products such as tablets, laptops, desktops, servers, smart phones, networking equipment, motherboards, video cards, disk drives, cases, and so on. Among this huge product portfolio, ASUS maintains their Republic of Gamers marketing which is generally applied to a certain subset of their enthusiast oriented offerings. Over the years, ASUS has expanded these items to include what we are interested in today; power supplies.

The first of which we have ever seen is with us today in the guise of the ROG THOR 1200W (ROG-THOR-1200P) which is produced in conjunction with Seasonic.

(Seasonic) is one of the older companies producing consumer power supplies having been founded in 1975 and entering the PC power supply production market in 1980. During that more than 30 years as a company Seasonic has cultivated lines of power supplies that are today some of the standard bearers for efficiency and quiet computing. This focus, and its reputation for quality, has lead to an explosion in production as Seasonic can be found providing OEM services on various model lines for Antec, XFX, Corsair, PC Power and Cooling, and of course under its own Seasonic brand.

Harness Thunder?.......and Ride the Lightning?

Interestingly enough, if you go looking for "power supplies" on ASUS' product page, you are likely to not find much. The ROG THOR is listed currently as a "Graphics Card Accessory."

The ASUS ROG THOR 1200W is the first power supply we have seen from ASUS which is a bit surprising given the size of ASUS and the breadth of their product portfolio. Indeed, over the years, ASUS has established themselves as one of the preeminent enthusiast DIY companies on the planet. Given their demonstrated level of success, we know that ASUS knows in general what enthusiasts want. However, today they are wading into new waters with the ROG THOR 1200W and getting set to do battle with some more entrenched Gods (Norse and non-Norse alike) in this realm. How does ASUS plan to go about trying to strike down these mighty ones? Let's see:

Inside and out, our first PSU is packed with innovative ideas.

Externally, Aura Sync RGB illumination and an integrated OLED information panel enable unique customization and monitoring options for your ROG gaming rig. Under the hood, high-quality capacitors, a 135mm Wing-blade fan, and large heatsinks allow the ROG Thor 1200W to achieve LAMBDA A+ and 80 PLUS Platinum certifications, making it ideal for PC enthusiasts who demand performance perfection.

Well, that is a bit short if we are expecting ASUS to really go "God tipping" but let's move on and see what we have to look forward to when we purchase the ASUS ROG THOR 1200W power supply in terms of documentation, accessories, cable count, rail layout, output characteristics, and general build quality.
