Today Thermaltake Technology Company is back for another trip through our power supply testing program with a more value oriented product than we last saw from them. As a company, Thermaltake has a rather short history being founded in just 1999, but in that short time they have grown rapidly. While Thermaltake's primary focus has been on thermal solutions, it has for some time now maintained a group of product lines dedicated to power supplies. The early power supplies in these lines were often of lower quality but over the years they have taken their power supply business in a new, and quite frankly better, direction as they paired with higher quality OEMs like CWT and Enhance. Today, we are looking at a new product that is part of the Toughpower Series of power supplies from Thermaltake. The unit we are looking at today is the Toughpower Grand RGB 850W Gold (RGB Sync Edition) (PS-TPG-0850FPCGxx-S, TPG-850AH3FSGR, etc) is produced in conjunction with Sirfa.
Sirfa Electronics Co., Ltd. is a name that is not that familiar to most users but Sirfa has been around since 1996 when Sirtec established Sirfa as a factory in the Sirtec group on mainland China. In June 2008, Sirtec sold off its interest in Sirfa making the company independent of the Sirtec brand but still in business with High Power. As such, while we have not seen any Sirfa produced power supplies under the Sirfa brand, some of the Sirtec units of the past were produced at the Sirfa facility. Additionally, we have seen Sirfa providing OEM services for Thermaltake, Enermax, PC Power & Cooling, Tuniq, Lepa, SilverStone, and others with very mixed results; sometimes good, sometimes bad.
Today, the Thermaltake Toughpower Grand RGB 850W Gold (RGB Sync Edition) is the latest in a long line of power supplies we have seen from Thermaltake over the years. Indeed, Thermaltake has been one of the most prolific vendors we have seen. So much so that this is the 5th 850W unit we have seen from them. Today's unit is also somewhat familiar in that it is sporting RGB integration once more. However, while "bling" is great it is performance that matters first and foremost. This is important as previous products that we have seen emphasize RGB as a big feature have been a bit short of what we would expect when it came to performance. So, one of our big questions to day will be; is that the case again? Before answering that, let's see if we have missed anything about this unit by seeing what Thermaltake has to say about this unit.
Built to deliver 80 PLUS Gold efficiency, Toughpower Grand RGB Gold (RGB Sync Edition) Series comes with capacities ranging from 650W to 850W. The preinstalled patented 256-color Riing 14 RGB fan allows 5 lighting modes and built-in memory function, and permits more custom RGB lighting possibilities thanks to the light synchronization with enthusiasts’ favorite RGB capable motherboard brands, including ASUS, GIGABYTE, msi, BIOSTAR and ASRock.
Constructed with premium components and ample 10-year warranty, this fully modular member’s near silent operation, trouble free installation and reliable performance have made itself satisfy the market where users are looking for a stylish power supply with advanced features and aesthetic appeal.
Let's move on now and see what we have to look forward to when we purchase the Thermaltake Toughpower Grand RGB 850W Gold (RGB Sync Edition) power supply in terms of documentation, accessories, cable count, rail layout, output characteristics, and general build quality.
