Corsair is known in enthusiast circles as a supplier of high performance memory and has risen to become one of the most talked about power supply brands around. Corsair was initially able to establish a presence in such a short time through the use of quality OEMs (Seasonic and CWT), rigorous standards, and excellent support. Since its entrance into the PSU field, it has established a number of lines of power supplies of varying quality to address (and overlap) just about every market segment. Today, we have another unit from Corsair's SF line; the SF600 2018 (CP-9020182-NA). This unit is once more produced in conjunction with Great Wall.
China Great Wall Computer Group Co. Ltd., a subsidiary of China Electronics Corporation, is a name that is not that well known to our North American readers. Great Wall was founded in 1986 and currently operates a number of companies producing products including power supplies, monitors, laptops, memory, flash products, and a laundry list of other PC and technology related products. In the power supply field, Great Wall is currently one of the largest suppliers of power supplies in the Chinese market. Its presence in North America, however, is very limited and one of the few brands we have seen using Great Wall products so far is OCZ and now Corsair.
The SFX form factor has been around for a very long time. However, it has not been until relatively recently that the power output of these kinds of units has been such that enthusiasts would sit up and take note. While certain brands like SilverStone have been stalwarts in this sector on the consumer side of things, growing markets attract new comers and one of those new comers was Corsair a number of years ago with the original SF600. Today, we are seeing Corsair's second take at the SF600 and we will, of course, be interested in this unit not just because it is of sufficient capacity to power a true enthusiast system but because it is a refresh of an already existing product line we have seen before. What has changed? What stayed the same? Is it better overall? Worse overall? A wash? We'll see. First though, what does Corsair have to say about this refresh:
CORSAIR SF Series SFX power supplies offer all the low-noise performance of an elite 80 PLUS Platinum PSU, ready to power the world’s best small form factor PCs.
The SF PLATINUM Series’ high-density design delivers high efficiency and low noise in a compact SFX form factor without compromising continuous power, reliability, or quality.
SF PLATINUM Series power supplies come equipped with premium individually sleeved cables featuring a flexible paracord sleeve, ready to become part of your new high-end PC. The individually sleeved cables also make routing and cable management a breeze, with a lower profile and added flexibility over flat or sleeved cable kits.
Moving on let’s see what we can expect when a user purchases the Corsair SF600 2018 power supply in retail in terms of documentation, accessories, cable count, rail layout, output characteristics, and general build quality.
