In the power supply realm, when consumers think of quiet and efficient power supplies one of the first companies that comes to mind is Seasonic. Today we our looking at a brand new Seasonic unit that is part of their PRIME Ultra series. In this review, we will specifically be looking at the 850W model in the PRIME Ultra series (SSR-850TR).
Seasonic is one of the older companies producing consumer power supplies having been founded in 1975 and entering the PC power supply production market in 1980. During that more than 40 years as a company Seasonic has cultivated lines of power supplies that are today some of the standard bearers for efficiency and quiet computing. This focus, and its reputation for quality, has lead to an explosion in production as Seasonic can be found providing OEM services on various model lines for Antec, XFX, Corsair, PC Power and Cooling, and of course under its own Seasonic brand.
To say that today's PRIME Ultra 850W is the latest in a long line of power supplies that we have seen from Seasonic would be somewhat of an understatement. In fact, to say that it is the latest in a long line of PRIME units we have seen from Seasonic would also be an understatement. However, it is just the third PRIME Ultra unit we have seen from Seasonic following the PRIME Ultra 1000W and PRIME Ultra 750W. As you might guess then, we have a good bit of experience with these lines from Seasonic and, as such, we have some rather defined expectations because of that. Those expectations are also not what one would call modest. Therefore, we will be scrutinizing this unit within an inch of its electrical life. Before we do that though, and see how this unit does, let's see what Seasonic has to say about this unit:
Its Ultra-high efficiency and outstanding performance are the fine results of Seasonic’s continuous commitment to innovation and advancement. Improved low-load efficiency, highly suppressed ripple noise and a generous 12-year manufacturer’s warranty are just some of the characteristics that set these series apart from other power supplies on the market.
Seasonic has included a PSU tester in the box that will let consumers perform a quick and easy jump start on the power supply. Each PRIME Ultra Series power supply will also ship with a SATA 3.3 adapter to support the "Power Disable" (PWDIS) feature of the newer, high-capacity hard drives. The inline capacitors on the cables were removed, which takes away the bulkiness inside the system. To maximize flexibility, the 180-degree SATA connectors ensuring more flexibility and easier installation.
Let’s move on now and see what we can expect when a user purchases the PRIME Ultra 850W power supply in retail in terms of documentation, accessories, cable count, rail layout, output characteristics, and general build quality.
