Corsair is known in enthusiast circles as a supplier of high performance memory and has risen to become one of the most talked about power supply brands around. Corsair was initially able to establish a presence in such a short time through the use of quality OEM’s (Seasonic and CWT), rigorous standards, and excellent support. Since its entrance into the PSU field, it has established a number of lines of power supplies of varying quality to address (and overlap) just about every market segment. Today, Corsair brings us another model in their HX line; the HX1000 (CP-9020139). This unit is once more produced in conjunction with CWT.
Channel Well Technology (CWT) was founded and began manufacturing power supplies in 1993. Since 1993 Channel Well Technology products have shown up under various guises including Antec, Xclio, 2theMax, CWT, Thermaltake, Xigmatek, and Corsair. While most familiar to our US users from when they used to provide OEM services for Antec, CWT is one of the more complete OEM manufacturers as they have a fairly high level of vertical integration providing transformers all the way up to its well designed independently regulated SMPS. However, CWT has been stretching out over the last few years and they are providing OEM services for a number of brands as today’s unit demonstrates.
Today’s Corsair HX1000 is the newest member of the HX series of power supplies from Corsair that we have seen. Over the years, we have had a number of HX units come through testing including three other ~1000W models (the HX1000W, HX1050, and HX1000i). In that time frame, we have seen not just the 1000W market segment but just about every market segment experience a ridiculous increase in quality, performance, and competition. So, the market that today’s HX1000 sails into looks almost nothing like that market which the original HX1000W sailed into almost 10 years ago. With the competition causing such rough seas, we hope to see Corsair back with its sea-legs under them once more and a full wind in the sail to reclaim their place among the top 1000W units on the market. Before moving on to see if this ship has successfully navigated these treacherous waters, let’s see what Corsair expects from this ship:
CORSAIR HX series power supplies give you extremely tight voltage regulation, quiet operation, Platinum-certified efficiency, and a fully modular cable set. Built with all Japanese 105C capacitors, they’re a great choice for high performance PCs where reliability is essential.
Well, that was short and to the point, and we can appreciate that. Let’s move on and see what we can expect when a user purchases the Corsair HX1000 power supply in retail in terms of documentation, accessories, cable count, rail layout, output characteristics, and general build quality.
