AMD & NVIDIA GPU VR Performance: Serious Sam VR:TLH

If battling Gnaars, Kamikaze dudes, Crazy Frogs, Kleers, Lava Monsters, and Bomb Spawners is on your list of things you want to do more of, then Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope might be right up your alley. We see how AMD and NVIDIA do with providing a great VR experience in SSVR.

What is Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope?

Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope is being developed by Croteam and published by DevolverDigital, it uses a custom DX11 Croteam engine. SSVR will be our 10th GPU-intensive title added to the HardOCP VR Leaderboardآ™ and requires the use of an HTC Vive system with motion controllers. SSVR is currently an Early Release title available on Steam. Most of you are likely familiar with the Serious Sam franchise, but if you are not, it is a tremendously fast paced first person shooter that is reminiscent of Duke Nukem 3D in many way. Serious Sam is back! And this time it's REAL!

It is the period of the first Mental War. Earth’s defense forces are crumbling under the hordes of the vicious Mental. He managed to break the will of many nations by destroying the ancient shrines of the domestic people. A fearless EDF general, Sam ‘Serious’ Stone, is leading the resistance from the battlecruiser ‘BC Saratoga’ in a desperate attempt to save the galaxy.

I have spent more than a few hours playing Serious Sam VR since its Early Access debut last week. There is not a huge amount of content in the title as it stands now, but that will certainly be expanded. I have kept my exposure to reviews and videos to almost nothing in terms of this game. I wanted to be able to have a "fresh" VR experience with it. The first thing that took me by surprise is that there is currently no locomotion in the game's environments. You are confined to a "platform" in each map. You then fight off the plethora of monsters in a basic 180 degree radius coming to kill you. It very much does fit the common theme of "wave shooter" that we have seen a lot of in the VR gaming space. A lot of folks like this, and a lot of folks do not. It does make SSVR a much different game than you are likely used to playing on your PC desktop.

With your back to the wall you get to dual-wield a lot of different weapons. And trust me, you will need two guns, a lot. SSVR is a ton of fun even if you cannot move around the map. The usual weapons at your fingertips, and the models and textures on these are excellent. SSVR can truly give you the feeling that you have a mini-gun in one hand and a rocket launcher in the other.

Even while the VR version of Serious Sam is a lot different, it is still very much Serious Sam. The graphics look great when tweaked to "better" levels and there are a lot of Image Quality options to dig into. In fact, you can push the graphics fidelity well beyond the ability of any GPUs we have access to today. SSVR is currently on sale for $31.99, with a regular price of $39.99. I paid for my copy of the game, and I have to say I felt as though the price for the content was a bit steep, but again, this is Early Access and the devs have explained that the content will be greatly expanded.
