One of the most prevalent companies in the consumer power supply realm, and general enthusiast PC realm, is Antec. Antec is a company that has been kicking around the PC DIY market since 1986 and in that time frame has become one of the most widely known brand names. In addition to power supplies Antec has product lines that include cases for work and play, cooling solutions, lighting, and other accessories. Over the years Antec has used a number of OEM providers for its power supplies including HEC, CWT, FSP, Enhance, Seasonic, and most prominently Delta. Today, we will be looking at a member of the EarthWatts line of power supplies; the EarthWatts Platinum 750W (EA-750 PLATINUM) made by FSP.
FSP Group is one of the few actual power supply manufacturers and can be found providing OEM services for a number of other brands at various times including OCZ, Zalman, AOpen, Antec, SilverStone, Super Talent, Sigma, and many more. This wide distribution of power supplies by FSP is not surprising given that they have been in business since 1993 and are one of the top 10 producers of power supplies in the world. FSP is also regarded as a manufacturer of basic workhorse type power supplies that "just gets the job done," but in recent years has branched out into higher end offerings as well as its own retail branded power supplies.
Over the years, we have seen a number of power supplies from Antec. However, among all of those power supplies, we have only rarely seen products that were from Antec's more mainstream or entry level product lines. Today though, we are looking at the EA-750 PLATINUM which is from one of Antec's mainstream/entry level line of products. Interestingly, we have also seen two other 750W units from Antec (Edge 750W and TruePower Classic 750W) in the not so distant past but those products were a bit upmarket from this unit. In fact, to find a comparable Antec product we have to go back to the previous EarthWatts 750W unit we saw was more than 6 years ago making that unit a very distant comparison. So, while we have seen a number of 750W products from Antec, most are not directly comparable and the EA-750 PLATINUM doesn't have a lot in the way of units from other manufacturers to compare it to either. From that perspective, and the fact that Antec usually produces solid products, the EA-750 PLATINUM should make for a unique review today. However, even if this unit were in a race of one, people can still take a tumble so we are interested in seeing how this product performs. Before moving on to see how it does though, let's see what Antec has to say about this unit and how they are going to pitch this product in their extensive lineup of power supplies:
Antec’s EarthWatts Platinum is one of the most efficient PSU series ever created. With an 80 PLUSآ® PLATINUM rating, the highest efficiency mark for power supplies, this PSU achieves up to 93% efficiency and gives you savings unheard of from other power supplies. By using the EA-750 Platinum, you can reduce your electricity bill up to 25%. A 3 year Antec Quality warranty, a whisper-quiet 120mm DBB fan controlled by Antec’s renowned Thermal Manager and CircuitShieldآ™’s industry-leading 8 levels of protection make the EA-750 Platinum one of the best choices available. Get the power you need, save money and help protect the environment with Antec’s EA-750 Platinum!
While this unit may be a mainstream product the advertising with this unit certainly still makes this unit seem full fledged. So, let's move on then and see what we can expect when a user purchases the Antec EA-750 PLATINUM power supply in retail in terms of documentation, accessories, cable count, rail layout, output characteristics, and general build quality.
