Seasonic is one of our longtime favorite brands when it comes to enthusiast computer power supplies. Its new 1,200 watt powerhouse still outshines many PSUs that it competes with. Interestingly enough Seasonic's biggest true competition seems to be... well... Seasonic.

In the power supply realm, when consumers think of quiet and efficient power supplies one of the first companies that comes to mind is Seasonic and today we have our 19th look at a Seasonic branded unit. This review covers a new entrant in the Platinum Series of power supplies for Seasonic, the PLATINUM-1200 (SS-1200XP3 PFC F3).

Seasonic is one of the older companies producing consumer power supplies having been founded in 1975 and entering the PC power supply production market in 1980. During that more than 30 years as a company Seasonic has cultivated lines of power supplies that are today some of the standard bearers for efficiency and quiet computing. This focus, and its reputation for quality, has lead to an explosion in production as Seasonic can be found providing OEM services on various model lines for Antec, XFX, Corsair, PC Power and Cooling, and of course under its own Seasonic brand.

Is Platinum Really Better Than Gold?

The Seasonic PLATINUM-1200 is the 19th power supply we have seen from Seasonic and currently it is the largest capacity member of the Platinum Series. Previously, we have seen a number of Platinum-Series units including ones that range all the way from 400 watts to 1000 watts including fanless models. Today's 1200 watt is a further stretch of this platform that so far has been a stellar performer in our testing. The question then becomes; is it a stretch too far? Given Seasonic's previous success, and the amount of time it took in releasing this 1200 watt unit, we would certainly hope not and we certainly do have high expectations for this power supply. Before moving on to look at this largest member of the Platinum Series and see how it measures up to our expectations, let's see what Seasonic has to say about this unit:

As has been the case with a number of Seasonic units of late, we truly don't have any idea how this unit is going to be positioned from what Seasonic presents us on its product page. However, we can take a fairly safe guess that this is supposed to be Seasonic's flagship product at the moment given how other Platinum units have been positioned and the capacity of this unit. Let's move on and see what we have to look forward to when we purchase the Seasonic PLATINUM-1200 power supply in terms of documentation, accessories, cable count, rail layout, output characteristics, and general build quality this will become clear.
