Corsair has quickly become one of the computer hardware enthusiast's favorite power supply brands by building and designing some of what have become the best PSUs in the world. Does the new 850 watt AX850 stand up to the already high bar set by Corsair?

Introduction

Corsair is known in enthusiast circles as a premier supplier of high performance memory and has risen to become one of the most talked about power supply brands around. Corsair was able to establish such an amazing presence in such a short time through the use of quality OEM’s (Seasonic and CWT), rigorous standards, and excellent support. Since its entrance into the PSU field, it has established a number of lines of power supplies to address (and overlap) just about every market segment with their GS, CX, VX, TX, HX, and AX lines. Today, Corsair brings us another member of their newest line of power supplies, the AX series, in the dress of the AX850 (CMPSU-850AX) that is produced in conjunction with Seasonic. This is a departure from the Flextronics produced AX1200 we recently reviewed, and it seems that Seasonic is producing not only the AX850 out of the AX line, but also the AX750 as well.

Seasonic is one of the older companies producing consumer power supplies having been founded in 1975 and entering the PC power supply production market in 1980. During that more than 30 years as a company Seasonic has cultivated lines of power supplies that are today some of the standard bearers for efficiency and quiet computing. This focus, and its reputation for quality, has lead to a real explosion in production as Seasonic can be found providing OEM services on various model lines for Antec, Corsair, PC Power and Cooling, and of course under its own Seasonic brand.

Corsair's Newest Ship; The Victory?

The Corsair AX850 is the second member of Corsair's new high-end AX line of power supplies, which overlaps its previous high-end line of power supplies the HX series, that we have seen cross our bench like a cannonball in flight. Not only that, but this is the third 850W power supply from Corsair we have reviewed to date. All three of those units do not target the same market as the TX850 is Corsair's entry level power supply, and certainly it performed as such when we reviewed and compare its performance to the high-end HX850 which performed significantly better. However, with the already excellent HX850 in the high-end market, where exactly is the AX850 going to fit in Corsair's product mix? Is it going to be redundant? Is it going to be a new stiff breeze in Corsair's sail? What does Corsair have to say about this very interestingly positioned product?

The Corsair Professional Series Gold power supply pushes the state of the art for reliable delivery of clean power under imperfect conditions. If you require mission-critical stability or you simply want one of the best power supplies available, the Professional Series Gold is for you.

Moving on let’s see what we can expect when a user purchases the Corsair AX850 power supply in retail in terms of documentation, accessories, cable count, rail layout, output characteristics, and general build quality.
